Special Issue "Recent Advances in Software-Defined Internet of Vehicles (SDIoV)"
DRANK

The Internet of Vehicles (IoVs) has emerged as a new spin-off research topic from the traditional vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) area. Unlike VANETs, the IoV paradigm assumes that vehicular nodes are connected to other smart objects equipped with a powerful multi-sensor platform, communication technologies, computation units, and IP-based connectivity to the Internet, thereby creating a network called Internet of Vehicles. A Software-Defined Network (SDN) is characterized as being a network in which the data and control planes are separated, allowing the network behavior to be managed by defining flow rules for each node belonging to the network. To achieve such network behavior, the OpenFlow Protocol is typically applied, allowing nodes belonging to the network to have a secure and direct communication with the SDN controller, receiving and sending forwarding policies around the network. The adoption of SDN concepts in the scope of the Internet of Vehicles is expected to achieve p…
