After MongoDB database was left open, containing 700,000 customer records, Choice Hotels, a hospitality giant, fell victim to hackers this week due to MongoDB's data breach.

Choice Hotels franchises 7,000 properties in 41 countries, under brands like Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Sleep Inn, Quality Inn, MainStay Suites, Econo Lodge, Clarion, Ascend, Cambria, Rodeway Inn and Suburban.

The information contained names, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers. According to Choice Hotels, other fields that contained passwords, reservation details and payment information only contained test data, according to a news report. Security researcher Bob Diachenko uncovered the exposed database and says the hackers left a ransom note, demanding almost $4,000 in Bitcoin.
